Introduction

This week we will be focusing on fractions. We will learn about unit fractions, equivalent fractions, and how to find fractions of amounts.

By the end of this week, you should be able to recognise and find unit fractions of amounts.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognise, find and write fractions of a discrete set of objects: unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators
  • Recognise and use fractions as numbers: unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators
  • Recognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominators
  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator within one whole [for example, 5/7 + 1/7 = 6/7]
  • Compare and order unit fractions, and fractions with the same denominators
  • Solve problems that involve all of the above

A fraction represents a part of a whole. The top number (numerator) tells us how many parts we have, and the bottom number (denominator) tells us how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
Equivalent fractions represent the same amount, like 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6.
To find a fraction of an amount, divide the total by the denominator and multiply by the numerator.
