Introduction

This week we will be focusing on division. We will learn how to divide by 2, 5, and 10, and understand division as sharing and grouping.

By the end of this week, you should be able to recall and use division facts for the 2, 5, and 10 times tables.

Learning Objectives

  • Recall and use division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers
  • Calculate mathematical statements for division within the multiplication tables and write them using the division (÷) and equals (=) signs
  • Solve problems, including missing number problems, involving multiplication and division, including positive integer scaling problems and correspondence problems in which n objects are connected to m objects
  • Write and calculate mathematical statements for division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for two-digit numbers divided by a single-digit number

  6. There are 50 marbles. They are shared equally between 10 bags. How many in each bag? (1 mark)
  7. A pizza is cut into 10 equal slices. How many slices if cut into 5 equal pieces? Wait, rephrase: A cake is cut into 10 equal pieces. How many pieces if cut into 5 equal pieces? (1 mark)
  8. Find the missing number: ? ÷ 10 = 7 (1 mark)
  9. Find the missing number: 90 ÷ ? = 9 (1 mark)
  10. Write a division sentence for: 30 shared equally between 5 groups (1 mark)

Remember that division is sharing equally. For example, 10 ÷ 2 means sharing 10 items between 2 groups.
Division is the inverse of multiplication. If 3 × 4 = 12, then 12 ÷ 3 = 4 or 12 ÷ 4 = 3.
Use grouping or arrays to help visualize division. For example, how many groups of 5 make 20?
