Introduction

This week we will be focusing on addition and subtraction. We will practice adding and subtracting numbers up to 1000, including mental methods and column methods.

By the end of this week, you should be able to add and subtract three-digit numbers confidently.

Learning Objectives

  • Add and subtract numbers mentally, including three-digit numbers and ones, tens and hundreds
  • Add and subtract numbers with up to three digits, using formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction
  • Estimate the answer to a calculation and use inverse operations to check answers
  • Solve problems, including missing number problems, using number facts, place value, and more complex addition and subtraction

  4. A farmer has 300 eggs. He sells 147. How many does he have left? (2 marks)
  5. Find two numbers that add up to 500. One number is 278. What is the other number? (2 marks)

Remember to use number lines or hundred squares to help with mental addition and subtraction.
When doing column addition, remember to add units first, then tens, then hundreds, and carry over if needed.
For subtraction, borrow from the next column if the top number is smaller than the bottom number.
